Frequently Asked Questions

for potential participants

What is an independent Jewish Early Childhood Program?

Independent Jewish early childhood education programs (iJECE) are defined by their structural anatomy, operating as standalone entities rather than subsidiaries of synagogues, federations, or Jewish Community Centers (JCCs).

Why just look at independent Jewish Early Childhood Programs?

This study focuses exclusively on independent Jewish Early Childhood Education (iJECE) programs to isolate the variables from those of a larger host organization. By narrowing this scope, the research can more accurately examine the specific correlation between JECE participation and the development of Jewish identity, rituals, and communal practices among families with young children

I know of a Jewish ECE program that might be independent. Can I suggest it for the study?

Absolutely. I welcome recommendations for sites that meet the criteria. If you are part of a program that operates independently of a larger synagogue or community center, please use the link below to submit the site details. I will review the program to see if it aligns with our research parameters.

Is there compensation?

Families that participate in the survey will be entered into a raffle to win one of four $50 gift cards to Amazon.

Survey families that meet the survey criteria will be asked to participate in an online interview to help provide context to the research. Unfortunately, there is no compensation provided for the interviews.

How do I get started?

Participants are asked to complete a pre-survey to see if they meet the research study participant criteria. Following the pre-survey, if you qualify, you will receive access to the study survey.

What is informed consent?

Before you join the study, I use a process called "informed consent" to make sure you have all the facts. I will explain the purpose of the research, what you’ll be doing, and any possible risks. The goal is to make sure you feel comfortable and informed so you can choose to join—or leave—at any time. It’s about your right to choose, not just signing a piece of paper.

Who is eligible to participate?

Your participation is completely voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time.

To take this survey, you must be:

  • At least 18 years old

  • At least one member of your household identifies as Jewish

  • The family's first child to attend a Jewish preschool must have been enrolled in an independent program and be one year post-graduation from the program.

  • Speaks English with proficiency

What will I do?

I would like to ask you about your family and your child’s current, past, and future experiences in educational activities, as well as your family’s religious and cultural experiences and traditions. The survey will take approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.

A small selection of survey families that meet the survey criteria will be asked to participate in a voluntary online interview to help provide context to the research. The interview will take approximately 45-60 minutes, conducted over Zoom.

What are the benefits of participating?

By sharing your experience, you will provide Jewish community leaders with the insights they need to improve programs and better support families like yours.
